Photographic Services Policy
Princeton University Art Museum has available digital images, for study or for publication, of many of the objects in its collection. The fee for a publication-quality image includes permission to use it for nonexclusive, one-time editorial use, inside books or periodicals, one edition, distribution worldwide. The fees are higher for other commercial uses. The museum assumes no responsibility for claims by third parties. All third party claims become the responsibility of the purchaser.
Copyright for works by Minor White and Ruth Bernhard is owned by the Trustees of Princeton University, and permission to reproduce works by them should be obtained from Princeton University Art Museum.
Reproduction is permitted only from images supplied by the Princeton University Art Museum. Color reproductions are allowed only from publication-quality digital files supplied to the client by the museum.
All requests for images and/or reproduction permission must be submitted in writing. When placing an order, please give as much information as possible about the work of art, including civilization, country, date, artist, title, medium, and the museum accession number. State fully the intended use of the material requested. If there is to be a publication, give a complete project description, including title, author, publisher, media, intended date of publication, print run, languages, and distribution.
A permission form will be sent if the image is to be reproduced. Permission is granted only after the fee is paid and the application form is fully executed. Payment of the fee in itself does not constitute permission to reproduce. A scholar who has obtained an image and later decides to publish it should contact the Princeton University Art Museum.
PREPAYMENT IS REQUIRED. Upon receipt of a written request, a prepayment invoice will be mailed. Payment must be made to Princeton University Art Museum, only in the form of an international or United States Postal Money Order, or a check in U.S. dollars written on a U.S. bank that is a member of the American Banking Association (ABA). The ABA number must be printed on the check, as well as your invoice number (Rxxxx). The museum is not responsible for any bank fees. If your method of payment incurs bank charges, your payment will be returned. Photographic material will be sent as soon as possible after receipt of payment. Please allow approximately eight weeks for delivery. Please let us know if you have a deadline. A surcharge will be added to requests requiring rush service or waiver of prepayment. If you want to pay by international bank transfer, please let us know in advance. There is a $20.00 surcharge to cover bank fees on this end.
Publication must include the complete credit line (including photo credit, if given) provided by Princeton University Art Museum. The applicant must provide, gratis, one copy of the publication to the Princeton University Art Museum. Send attention: Photo Services.
Princeton University Art Museum in its sole discretion reserves the right to deny permission to any applicant whose product is not acceptable to the museum for any reason. Unpaid invoices are cancelled after six months. There are no refunds.
