How to Read a Painting’s Provenance

The paintings are listed alphabetically by artist with the artist’s nationality and dates, the title of the work (in italics), the medium, and the dimensions (in metric units). The credit line, telling how the work was acquired, and the accession number, indicating when it was acquired, also are given. (The accession number y1950-1, for example, shows that the painting was the first object to enter the collection in 1950).

The provenance is listed in chronological order, beginning with the earliest known owner. Information about dates of ownership is in parentheses. Successive owners are separated by semicolons. Information about sales includes the auction house, location of the sale, date, lot (or number assigned to the painting in the sale), and, if possible, other information about its purchase. Question marks denote uncertainty.
