Internships

The Princeton University Art Museum offers two paid internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students: a ten-week summer internship program and the academic-year McCrindle internship program.

Summer internship program
The Art Museum offers a ten-week, full-time summer internship program. Part-time positions are also available for graduate students who are restricted to part-time work by departmental funding regulations (please contact your department to inquire about any regulations prior to submitting an application).

Interns have the opportunity to work in one of the following departments: curatorial, education, development, information technology, marketing, office of the registrar, publications, or retail operations. Not all departments take interns each summer, and interns are placed on the basis of their experience, academic training and departmental need.

In addition to their departmental responsibilities, interns participate in a two-day orientation program during their first week and weekly lunch discussions with Museum staff. Field trips and networking opportunities with interns at other arts-related organizations are also arranged.

Eligibility
Undergraduate students from any four-year college or university, and graduate students who have completed their first year in a M.A. or Ph.D. program in art history, archaeology, or a related field, are eligible to apply. Princeton University students are given priority for all positions.

Dates and compensation
The 2012 program will run from Monday, June 11 through Friday, August 17. Undergraduate students (and recent college graduates) are paid $13 per hour. Graduate students are paid $18 per hour.

How to apply
Before submitting an application, please review carefully the instructions below as well as the list of Frequently Asked Questions. The deadline for receipt of all application materials for the 2012 program has been extended to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012. No applications will be accepted after this date, and incomplete applications will not be considered. It is preferred that applications are submitted electronically but will also be accepted via hard copy.

Your application must include the following materials:

  • Personal statement describing your specific interest in the internship program (including your preferred department of placement) and how a museum internship relates to your larger educational and career goals. If you are interested in a curatorial internship, please indicate a specific curatorial field (American art, Ancient and Islamic art, Art of the Ancient Americas, Asian art, European art, Modern and Contemporary art, Photography, or Prints and Drawings) and describe your experience in this field (including any relevant coursework and languages).
  • A C.V. or resumé.

Letters that are submitted via hard copy must be signed by the letter writer and submitted in a sealed envelope with the letter writer’s signature across the seal. If the letter is sent via email, it should be sent directly from the letter writer to the internship program email account. Unofficial transcripts (e.g. print-outs from the registrar’s website or photocopies) will not be accepted. Transcripts should be sent directly from your school to the internship program.

No additional application materials, such as additional letters of recommendation or portfolios of student art work, are necessary.

Applicants will be notified via email when their complete application has been received. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews, and all applicants will be notified of their status no later than April 30, 2012.

Due to the high volume of application submissions, we regret that we are unable to respond to individual queries regarding the status of your application. Please note that the internship program email address is not monitored on a regular basis other than for receipt of internship application materials. For more information about the internship program and application process, please review our list of Frequently Asked Questions.

The summer internship program is made possible in part by the Frelinghuysen Foundation and the Hilla von Rebay Foundation.

McCrindle Internship program for the academic year

The academic-year internship program offers part-time internships that are restricted to Princeton University students, except in cases where the project requires specialized expertise in a field of study not offered at Princeton. McCrindle Interns generally work no more than ten hours per week for one or both semesters during the academic year. Undergraduate students are paid $13 per hour and graduate students are paid $18 per hour. Applicants are solicited to work on specific projects that are announced in the spring semester, with applications due in June for the following academic year.

Please check back in the spring of 2012 for more information about projects for the 2012-13 academic year and application deadlines.

The academic-year internship program is made possible by an endowment from the estate of Joseph F. McCrindle.
