Student Volunteer Opportunities
Student volunteers contribute to the success of the educational and social programming of the Art Museum. Volunteers staff the information desk on Late Thursdays, assist with our Saturday morning Art for Families program, give tours, and comprise the Student Advisory Board. The Student Advisory Board promotes the Museum and its activities to the student community.
Information Desk
Student volunteers are needed to staff the Art Museum’s information desk on Thursday evenings. Information desk attendants greet visitors to the galleries, answer questions, and provide additional information about Museum programming.
Art for Families
The Art Museum offers a free, drop-in educational program for families each Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to1 p.m., during the academic year. The program consists of a self-guided scavenger hunt centered on a child-friendly theme and a related craft project. Student volunteers assist children and families with the scavenger hunts and craft projects and should be comfortable working with young children. More information about each week’s program is listed on the Museum's calendar.
Student Tour Guides
Each year, the Art Museum trains a select group of student volunteers to give tours to school groups and the general public. Benefits of becoming a tour guide include access to the Museum’s docent library, thank-you points via the Museum’s student volunteer appreciation program, and the opportunity to develop excellent research and public speaking skills.
Student tour guides give highlights tours, which are free and open to the public, on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. during the academic year. Experienced tour guides can continue their training to give tours to K-12 school groups.
Student tour guide training for the 2010-2011 academic year will be offered as a one-week intensive “boot camp” during winter intersession. Students interested in applying for this training program should email their name, class year, major, and a brief statement regarding why they would like to be a tour guide to puamsoc@princeton.edu. Applications are due by December 15, 2010. Please note that this is the only training opportunity that will be offered this academic year.
Student tour guides must be able to commit to at least one tour per semester in order to remain on the roster of active tour guides.
Student Advisory Board
The Student Advisory Board (SAB) comprises currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate Princeton University students, who are elected each winter. The role of the SAB is to ensure that students’ voices are always a part of the Museum’s conversation and to serve as the governing body for the Art Museum’s student group, the Collective. Board members also sponsor and assist with the planning of social events at the Art Museum, including two annual events: Failed Love (an anti-Valentine’s Day party), and the spring Student Gala.
How to get involved
Princeton University students interested in volunteering for any of the above-mentioned programs should contact the Student Outreach Coordinator at puamsoc@princeton.edu.
